Multinational banking and financial services company PKO Bank Polski officially commenced operations in Romania on January 1, 2025. The establishment of its corporate branch in Bucharest marks a significant milestone in the bank’s international expansion strategy for 2025-2027. This move aligns with PKO Bank Polski’s goal of strengthening its presence in Central and Eastern Europe, with Romania being identified as a key economic hub in the region.
The new Bucharest branch, operating under the name “PKO Bank Polski S.A. Warsaw, Bucharest Branch,” aims to provide financial services to both Polish companies operating in Romania and local Romanian businesses. It also serves as a bridge for Romanian companies seeking to expand into the Polish market. The decision to expand into Romania reflects the growing economic ties between the two nations, with mutual trade exceeding €7 billion in 2023. Sectors such as food, furniture, construction chemicals, IT, and white goods are identified as primary areas of interest for Polish investments in Romania.
PKO Bank Polski has already established corporate branches in Frankfurt, Prague, and Bratislava and operates in Ukraine through its subsidiary Kredobank. Romania represents the fourth European market for the bank and is part of its broader plan to expand into eight additional European countries over the coming years.
With a net profit of 6.9 billion Polish zloty (€1.619 billion) in the first nine months of 2024, PKO Bank Polski has reinforced its leadership position in the Polish banking sector. The bank provides comprehensive financial services to all customer segments and is committed to supporting international growth.
Romania’s status as the second-largest economy in Central and Eastern Europe, combined with its dynamic trade relationship with Poland, underscores the strategic importance of this expansion. PKO Bank Polski’s move reflects the broader trend of increasing Polish investments in the region and aims to foster stronger economic collaboration between the two countries.
