CAPITAL MARKET MOVING NEWS

POLITICS

-With 99.45% of votes counted in the country’s parliamentary elections, the ruling Social Democratic Party (PSD) won 22.6% of votes. The Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) was in second place, with 18.2%, and the National Liberal party (PNL), the Social Democrats’ coalition ally in Romania’s outgoing government, in third on 14.4%. SOS and POT, had 7.6% and 6.3%, respectively, and the ethnic Hungarian Party UDMR got 6.5%.

-Romanian President Klaus Iohannis promulgates a law saying shareholders can participate, vote in general meetings online, by mail. “Shareholders, in person or represented, can participate and vote physically or by electronic means of distance communication in general meetings. They can also express their vote by mail,” the normative act which amends and supplements the Companies Law no. 31/1990 states.

ECONOMY

-Romania’s unemployment rate stood at 5.4% in October 2024, decreasing by 0.2 percentage points compared to September 2024, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data showed.

-The Ministry of Finance on Monday attracted 710.3 million RON from banks, issuing a benchmark government bond with a residual maturity of 53 months, at an average yield of 7.17%, the National Bank of Romania (BNR) data showed.

-Several editors of print media are complaining about the unilateral increase, without consultation, by the management of the Romanian Post Office, of the commissions collected for the distribution of printed newspapers, according to a statement sent to News.ro and signed by the representatives of 17 local newspapers.

FINANCE

-American investment firm Franklin Templeton, which has been managing Romanian fund Fondul Proprietatea since 2010, has announced it decided to it would not seek a new term as the Fund’s manager. The firm will therefore not submit a response to the request for proposal (RFP) to the selection advisor, Deutsche Numis.

-On 30 November 2024, the National Bank of Romania’s foreign exchange reserves stood at EUR 61,174 million, compared to EUR 62,841 million on 31 October 2024. The gold stock remained steady at 103.6 tonnes. However, following the change in the international price of gold, its value amounted to EUR 8,399 million.

COMPANIES

-The Dutch shipbuilding company Damen, which acquired a 49% stake in Romania’s Mangalia shipyard in 2018, and the Romanian state-owned company 2MMS agreed to terminate their association contract for the shared operation of the shipyard (Santierul Naval 2 Mai) on the Black Sea coast of Romania. The shipyard filed for a bankruptcy proceeding at the end of May. Damen has a long history with Romania operating the Galati shipyard since 1999.

-GLO Marine, a Romanian naval architecture and consulting company, announced the opening of a new office in Bucharest, a hub dedicated to naval engineering with a focus on sustainability projects. The company oversees every stage of the vessel modernization process and is now one of the few providers in Europe offering comprehensive retrofit solutions.

CAPITAL MARKET COMMENTARY

Bucharest stocks traded in the green on Monday rebounding off last week’s sell-off. The benchmark BET index, which tracks the performance of the 20 most liquid companies, closed up 0.63%. Iasi-based drug maker Antibiotice led the blue-chip gainers, surging 4.76%.
