CAPITAL MARKET MOVING NEWS

POLITICS

The Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) announced on Thursday (Dec. 5) that the start of voting for the second round of the presidential elections will be held abroad, with the first polling station to be opened in Auckland, New Zealand, on Friday (Dec. 6) at 1:00 a.m. Romanian time.

ECONOMY

-The Macroeconomic Confidence Index of CFA Romania Association decreased in November by 13.5 points to 31.4 points, the lowest level since July 2020, “amid extremely high political uncertainty and a significant increase in investor risk aversion.”

-Romania’s electricity imports amounted to 3,000 MW, on Wednesday (Dec.4), reaching a new high. Imports increased by 86% in January-September 2024. The biggest imports came from Hungary, followed by Bulgaria and Serbia, Transelectrica data showed.

-The government approved on Wednesday (Dec. 4) by emergency ordinance, fiscal-budgetary measures related to the IT systems RO e-Invoice and RO e-TVA, as well as to the profit and income tax, VAT and excises, Agerpres reported.

-Compared to September 2024, in October 2024 the retail turnover volume (excluding the trade
with motor vehicles and motorcycles) increased both as gross series by 2.3% and as adjusted
series according to the number of working days and to seasonality 0.9%, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data showed.

-Compared to October 2023, in October 2024 the arrivals in the establishments of tourists’ reception with functions of tourists’ accommodation, including apartments and rooms for rent, increased by 5.6%, while the overnight stays increased by 4.5%, INS said.

-Romania’s budget deficit will amount to 8.6% of GDP in 2024 (on cash methodology), according to a draft Government Emergency Ordinance (OUG) published by the Finance Ministry and adopted by the Government on Wednesday (Dec. 4).

-The number of public sector employees in Romania grew and exceeded 1.3 million at the end of October 2024, for the first time since 2009, Profit.ro reported. The biggest increases in the number of state employees were recorded at the Ministry of Defense (+5,559 posts).

FINANCE

-The Government plans to borrrow up to EUR 4.975 from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to partially cover the national financing needed for the implementation of investments included in the 2021-2027 Transport Program and the Connecting Europe Facility, Profit.ro reported.

COMPANIES

-Romania’s largest natural gas producer and supplier Romgaz announced on Dec 4, 2024 that the Iernut power plant in Mures County, a project worth EUR269 million for a capacity of 430 MW, is due to be completed until June 30, 2025.

REAL ESTATE

Bucharest’s office space stock is among the “youngest” in Europe, but also in CEE, with an average age of around 11 years, which is a plus for owners in retaining and attracting new tenants, Cushman & Wakefield Echinox data showed.
