MARKET MOVING NEWS

ECONOMY

-Romania’s annual inflation rate stood at 5.1% in December 2024, unchanged from the previous month and remaining at its highest level since August, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) said.

-ING Bank expects the National Bank of Romania to keep the key rate at 6.50% on Wednesday (Jan. 15), given persistent inflationary risks, the Dutch lender said in a report on Monday (Jan. 13).

-Romania had the highest current account deficit in the European Union in Q3 2024 (EUR 9 billion), Eurostat data showed.

-Romania’s total external debt (public and private) grew by EUR 19.2 billion to EUR 202.4 billion in the first eleven months of 2024 compared to the level recorded on 31 December 2023, accoring to BNR data.

-Net foreign direct investments (FDI) in Romania decreased by 7% year on year to less than €6bn in the 12 months to November 2024, data published by the National Bank of Romania (BNR) showed. Equity holdings (including estimated reinvestment of earnings) stood at EUR 4.720 billion, while intercompany lending had a net value of EUR 1.132 billion.

FINANCE

-Romania’s Finance Ministry raised RON1.1 billion from banks on Monday (Jan.13), through two auctions of government securities at annual average yields of 6.65% and 7.70%, respectively.

-The 39 insurers operating on the Romanian market (25 authorized by the Financial Supervisory Authority and 14 branches) underwrote RON 16.9 billion premiums in January-September 2024, up 12% on an annual basis, data published by the ASF revealed.

-As of 26 December 2024, a new law (Law no. 317/2024) establishes that tax receipts are no longer communicated (printed or handed out depending on their format) for payments made with bank cards, except upon customers’ express request.

COMPANIES

-Pillar II private pension funds BCR Pensii and BRD Pensii, which manage pensions for 1.4 million people, bought into drug maker Antibiotice Iasi spending RON50 million during the almost RON300 million private placement in November when Infinity Capital Investments halved its stake to 13%.

Bucharest closed higher on Tuesday with the BET index gaining 0.54%. Power supplier and distributor Electrica led blue-chip gainers. The total equity turnover of the BVB stood at RON 30.46 million lei (EUR 6.1 million euro).
