CAPITAL MARKET MOVING NEWS

ECONOMY

-Romania’s public debt (in both RON and foreign currency) stood at RON916.7 billion in September 2024, which is nearly 17% higher since the beginning of the year and accounts for 53.1% of gross domestic product (GDP), Finance Ministry data showed.

-In the third quarter of 2024 compared with the same quarter of the previous year, the highest increases in hourly wage costs for the whole economy in the EU were recorded in Romania (+17.1%), Croatia (+15.1%), Hungary (+14.1%), Eurostat data showed.

-Romania’s industrial production grew by 6.2% in October 2024, in unadjusted data, on a monthly basis, and by 0.4% when adjusted for the number of working days and seasonality, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data showed.

-Romania has the third highest youth unemployment rate in the European Union, after Spain and Sweden, according to recent data by Eurostat and the National Institute of Statistics. The unemployment rate among young people under 24 has risen to 27%, with young women struggling with over 28% unemployment.

FINANCE

-Banca Transilvania is lending EUR40 million to Constanta-based Omnia Europe SA (Omnia Romania), a leading corn starch producer and owner of the largest starch factory in Romania and southeastern Europe. Half the loan amount, EUR20 million, will be guaranteed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), under the Risk-Sharing Facility (RSF) with Banca Transilvania.

COMPANIES

-Bucharest-listed MedLife, the largest private healthcare provider in Romania, announced that Mihai Marcu, the company’s CEO and the largest individual shareholder, sold 1 million M shares, at the price of RON5.82 per share.

-AQUILA, the market leader in integrated distribution and logistics services for consumer goods in Romania and the Republic of Moldova, inked an agreement to acquire 100% of the shares of KITAX Kft, one of the top five distribution companies in its sector, with nationwide coverage in Hungary.

-Romanian coffee shop chain 5 to go is in final talks with two new investors, Invenio Partners and ACP, the former Mezzanin Management, which want to take over part of the stock owned by the company’s founder, Radu Savopol, and the entire stake of Mozaik Investments, Ziarul Financiar reported citing market sources .

– Only 14% of Romanian corporate non-executive board members believe that significant international experience is important, a stark contrast to their Western counterparts, according to the a survey conducted in Romania by TRANSEARCH.

REAL ESTATE

-The BT Property Alternative Investment Real Estate Fund, managed by BT Asset Management SAI SA, part of the Banca Transilvania Financial Group, is expanding in the retail market by acquiring Prima Shops Oradea park from Oasis Group.

CAPITAL MARKET COMMENTARY

Bucharest stocks traded lower on Monday in line with rest of Europe after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz lost the vote of no confidence in his government, resulting in the scheduled snap federal election in the European Union’s largest economy. The benchmark BET index closed down 1.04%.
