ECONOMY

-At the end of the third quarter of 2024, the government debt-to-GDP ratio stood at 81.6% in the EU and remained unchanged compared to the end of the second quarter of 2024. Compared with Q3/2023, sixteen Member States registered an increase in the debt-to-GDP ratio at the end of the third quarter of 2024, while eleven Member States recorded a decrease. The largest increases in the ratio were reported by Finland (+6.7 pp), Estonia (+5.3 pp), Poland (+4.9 pp), Austria (+4.6 pp), Romania and Bulgaria (both +3.6 pp) and Latvia (+3.5 pp).

-Cristian Popa, a member of the National Bank of Romania (NBR)’s Board of Directors, has warned that Romania risks economic stagnation and loss of competitiveness if it adopts an unsustainable economic model based on consumption and debt, without investments in technology, reforms and innovation, local daily Bursa reported.

-In December 2024, the Macroeconomic Confidence Index of CFA Romania increased by 6.7 points to 38.1 points, but remains at an extremely low level amid high uncertainty about the direction of Romania economy.

-Romania’s industrial sales (on the domestic and external markets) decreased by 3.8% in nominal terms in November 2024 versus October 2024, but increased by 5.2% compared with November 2023, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data showed.

FINANCE

-TechAngels, the largest group of private technology investors in Romania, ended 2024 with total investments of EUR3.777 million in tech startups, up 25% compared to 2023. Most of the investment was made in H2 when it reached EUR2.757 million, almost triple the H1 level.

COMPANIES

-Companies in Romania expect a challenging year ahead, marked by cautious optimism and a focus on managing risks and costs, the Deloitte 2025 Romania CFO Survey reveals. The study was conducted at the end of 2024 among approximately 130 Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) based in the country.
