POLITICS

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis announced on Monday that he will leave the post as the parliament is set to vote for his impeachment. “I will leave office the day after tomorrow, February 12,” the president said in a statement. In his place, Senate President Ilie Bolojan will take office on an interim basis.

ECONOMY

-Economic Complexity Index: Romania ranks as the 20th most complex economy in the Economic Complexity Index (ECI) compiled by Harvard University. The index evaluates 145 countries, measuring development and the sophistication of exports.

-Romania’s trade deficit widened to €33.39 billion in 2024, marking a 15.3% increase compared to 2023, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

-Romania’s real estate sector started 2025 on a downward trend, with the number of property transactions in January falling by 17% nationwide and 18% in Bucharest, according to a report from Storia, the real estate platform launched by OLX.

-Romania recorded 4,696,568 pensions in January 2025, a decrease of 6,781 from the previous month. The average pension stood at 2,752 lei, according to data from the National House for Public Pensions (CNPP).

FINANCE

-Tezaur Treasury Bills: Romania’s Ministry of Finance announced the launch of new Tezaur Treasury bills on Monday.

– Brokerage firm Swiss Capital and Swiss Capital Asset Management reported a combined ownership of 10.02% in Green Tech International, which supplies geothermal water to the Calimanesti and Caciulata localities.

COMPANIES

-Company Deregistrations: A total of 83,012 companies were deregistered in Romania in 2024, marking a 16.52% increase from 2023, according to data from the National Trade Registry Office (ONRC).

-FrieslandCampina Exit: Dutch dairy giant FrieslandCampina, owner of Napolact, is reportedly seeking to sell its Romanian business, according to sources from Ziarul Financiar.

-OMV Petrom Transaction: Romania’s Competition Council is currently reviewing the outsourcing of transportation services by OMV Petrom S.A. from production areas in Oltenia and Valahia Pitesti to road transport company Eugen Trans.
