ECONOMY

Romania concluded 2024 with a current account deficit of EUR 29.3 billion, an increase of nearly EUR 7.8 billion from 2023, according to central bank data released on Thursday.

The average net salary in Romania rose by 4.8% (+RON 257) in nominal terms in December 2024 compared to November, reaching RON 5,645 (EUR 1,134), as per data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Romania’s industrial production fell by 13.9% in December 2024 (unadjusted), compared to the previous month, and by 1.2% when adjusted for working days and seasonality, INS data revealed.

The Bucharest-Ilfov region achieved a GDP at purchasing power per capita equivalent to 190% of the EU average in 2023, ranking just behind Prague and Brussels, but ahead of Hamburg, according to Eurostat.

FINANCE

The Ministry of Finance borrowed RON 600 million from banks on Thursday through a benchmark government bond issue with a residual maturity of 156 months, at an average annual yield of 7.44%, the National Bank of Romania (BNR) reported.

COMPANIES

Twenty Romanian entrepreneurial companies, with a combined turnover of EUR 2.7 billion in 2023 and employing 9,204 people, received Deloitte’s “Best Managed Companies” certification for managerial excellence based on international best practices, selected from 113 participating local firms.

The Romanian M&A market recorded 239 announced deals in 2024, with an estimated total value of EUR 5.9 billion, according to PwC Romania. The market is projected to reach EUR 7 billion in 2025.
