ECONOMY

Romania’s economy grew by 0.7% in the fourth quarter of 2024 in both unadjusted and seasonally adjusted terms compared to the same period in 2023. Quarter-on-quarter, GDP advanced by 0.8% in real terms, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

The National Bank of Romania maintained its benchmark interest rate at 6.5% on February 14, aiming to ensure price stability and support sustainable growth amid global uncertainties and domestic fiscal challenges.

Annual inflation in Romania edged down to 5% in January 2025 from 5.1% in the previous two months, in line with market expectations. Inflation slowed for food (4.54% vs 5.09% in December) and services (6.54% vs 7.1%).

New car and light commercial vehicle sales are expected to increase by 1.1% in 2025, with Romania and Slovakia projected to be the only Central European countries with positive growth, according to PwC Autofacts.

Final electricity consumption in Romania rose by 1.8% in 2024, with household consumption up 2.7% and commercial consumption up 1.6%, while public lighting decreased by 6.7%, INS reported.

FINANCE

Sinteza Oradea (STZ.RO) announced that Roca Investments, holding 18% in Sinteza, conducted an accelerated private placement on February 13 to sell 11.9 million shares.

Hidroelectrica (H2O.RO) made several deposits with Exim Banca Romaneasca on January 10, due on May 6, 2025.

Romania’s Finance Ministry raised RON600 million through benchmark bonds at an annual yield of 7.48% on February 13.

Mikro Kapital S.A. debuted on the Bucharest Stock Exchange’s Multilateral Trading System on February 14 with a EUR2 million bond issue maturing in 2027.

The Competition Council is reviewing CTP Property BV Netherlands’ acquisition of P3 Group’s Romanian operations, including P3 Bucharest A1.

Nuclearelectrica (SNN) signed four energy sales contracts worth RON246.6 million with Energy Distribution Services for July 2025 to December 2026.

20 Romanian companies with EUR2.7 billion combined turnover and 9,204 employees received Deloitte’s “Best Managed Companies” certification.

The Romanian watch and jewelry market’s turnover rose 6% in 2023 to RON2.8 billion, a 187% increase since 2014, according to KeysFin.
