-Romania’s unemployment rate edged up to 5.6% in February 2025, rising by 0.1 percentage points from 5.5% in January 2024, according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) on Tuesday.
-In real estate, average apartment prices—both old and new—increased by 12% year-on-year in March 2025, reflecting persistent demand pressures in the housing sector. The data was sourced from Storia, the real estate platform operated by OLX
FINANCE
-Romania’s foreign exchange reserves totaled EUR 61.9 billion at the end of March 2025, down EUR 600 million from the EUR 62.5 billion reported a month earlier, the National Bank of Romania (BNR) confirmed.
-The Fidelis government bond program continues to attract retail interest with competitive rates—7.6% in RON and 6% in EUR. The next issuance is scheduled for April 4–11, 2025.
-The country’s insurance market posted strong performance, with gross underwritten premiums totaling RON 23.4 billion in 2024, an increase of 11% year-on-year, according to the Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF).
-On the liquidity front, Romgaz (SNG), Romania’s state-run natural gas producer, announced it had made a term deposit with Exim Banca Românească on February 20. The deposit, with a negotiated interest rate and no auto-renewal, was disclosed in a filing to the Bucharest Stock Exchange on March 31.
COMPANIES
-In a landmark regional transaction, Finland’s Mehiläinen Group has acquired the full ownership of Romania’s Regina Maria healthcare network, along with Serbia’s MediGroup. Both entities were part of Mid Europa’s portfolio. The deal is the largest medical sector acquisition in Central Europe to date.
-Meanwhile, Wizz Air, the Hungarian low-cost carrier, officially opened a new base at Bucharest Băneasa Airport on April 1. The new base will operate using an Airbus A321neo, reinforcing the airline’s long-term presence in the region.
