MARKET MOVING NEWS

ECONOMY

-Romania’s economy could face potential headwinds as U.S. President Donald Trump’s proposed 25% tariffs on EU products could disrupt trade flows, according to an analysis by iBanFirst, a leading global provider of foreign exchange and international payments. The United States remains Romania’s second-largest trade partner after the United Kingdom making the country particularly vulnerable to the potential tariffs.

-Romania’s foreign exchange reserves stood at EUR 62.5 billion at the end of February 2025, marking a EUR 1.75 billion increase from the EUR 60.8 billion recorded on January 31, 2025, according to the National Bank of Romania (NBR).

FINANCE

-Banca Transilvania, Romania’s largest lending institution, has successfully completed its merger with OTP Bank Romania, strengthening its market position. Following the merger, Banca Transilvania’s market share has reached 23%, while its total assets saw a 9% increase.

-Vista Bank announced an agreement with Alpha Bank S.A. and its subsidiaries Alpha International Holdings S.M.S.A., under which Vista Bank will acquire 100% of Alpha Leasing (Romania). This acquisition also includes Alpha Insurance Brokerage (Romania), solidifying Vista Bank’s expansion in the financial services sector.

COMPANIES

-Rompetrol Well Services, a key player in wellbore special services, reported a RON 10.3 million net profit in 2024, a 12.6% decrease from the 2023 level.

-Nuclearelectrica (SNN.RO), Romania’s nuclear power producer, posted a RON 1.7 billion net profit in 2024, reflecting a 31.9% decline compared to the RON 2.5 billion reported in 2023, according to its annual financial report to the Bucharest Stock Exchange.

-Aerostar Bacău, a supplier of aerostructures, subassemblies, and hydraulic systems, recorded a RON 95.7 million net profit in 2024, representing a 2.9% increase compared to 2023.

-Sameday, a major courier services provider owned by eMAG Group, has expanded its presence in the IT and digital marketing sector. The company acquired a 24.9% stake in Zitec, previously held by eMAG for the past eight years.

CAPITAL MARKET COMMENTARY

Bucharest stocks traded in the red on Monday, bucking the broader European trend, where markets closed higher on a rally in defense shares. The Romanian benchmark BET index declined 0.25%, with Transport Trade Services (TTS) leading blue-chip losses. TTS shares sank 6.27%, making it the session’s biggest decliner.
