ECONOMY

-Romania is preparing state aid schemes for companies affected by the new customs tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday, April 2, according to Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu.

-On Monday, April 7, the nine members of the National Bank of Romania’s Board of Directors will meet to discuss, among other topics, the new economic reality generated by these tariffs, sources within the central bank told HotNews.

-Price hikes and potential punitive measures from the U.S. could impact Romania’s economy, particularly sectors with close ties to the American market, notes Alex Milcev, head of EY Romania’s Tax and Legal Department.

-According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INS), Romania’s exports to the U.S. reached €2.11 billion in 2024, while imports stood at €1.2 billion—resulting in a trade surplus of over €900 million. The U.S. is Romania’s second-largest non-EU trading partner, after the United Kingdom, and the 12th overall. Exports to the U.S. represent 2.5% of Romania’s trade, while imports account for 1% (aggregated data from the first 11 months of 2024).

-The number of employees in Romania’s public institutions and authorities reached 1,311,451 in February 2025—an increase of 4,558 compared to the end of last year, according to figures published on the Finance Ministry’s website.

FINANCE


-Romania’s Finance Ministry raised RON 1.4 billion from banks on Thursday (April 3), selling government securities in two separate auctions, with annual average yields of 6.36% and 7.22%, respectively.

-Approximately 61% of Romanians report having been targeted by online fraud attempts, according to the latest study by Reveal Marketing Research. The most common consequences were device infections with malware or viruses (42%) and monetary losses (30%).

COMPANIES

-UCM Resita (UCM.RO), a company from which Hidroelectrica (H2O.RO) acquired 40% of assets via Uzina de Constructii Masini Hidroenergetice last year, announced on Wednesday that the Bucharest Court of Law ordered bankruptcy proceedings to begin on April 1.

-Around 83% of Romanian employees receive fringe benefits from their employers, according to a survey conducted by the recruitment platform eJobs. The most common benefits include meal vouchers, holiday bonuses, private medical subscriptions, and flexible remote work options.

CAPITAL MARKET COMMENTARY

The Bucharest Stock Exchange ended in the red on Thursday, in line with global markets, following President Trump’s announcement of a 10% universal tariff on most imported goods—alongside higher tariffs targeting countries with significant trade deficits or non-tariff barriers. The benchmark BET index fell 1.32%, with Electrica leading blue-chip losses, as its shares dropped 2.78%.
