ECONOMY


-Romania’s Interim President Ilie Bolojan cautioned on April 8th that new US trade tariffs would negatively impact the Romanian economy, even if the direct effects are limited.

-Romania’s trade deficit significantly increased by 35.1% year-on-year to EUR 5.62 billion in the first two months of 2025, according to INS data released today.

-A March 2025 INSCOP Research survey (margin of error +/-3.1%) indicates strong public support for increased foreign investment (67.9%) and expansion of Romanian companies within the EU (82.1%), reflecting confidence in local entrepreneurship.

FINANCE

-The Romanian mergers and acquisitions (M&A) market saw a decrease in activity in Q1 2025, with 51 transactions totaling an estimated USD 1 billion. This represents a 25% drop in deal volume and a 29% decrease in value compared to Q4 2024 (EY analysis).

-Reports from Ziarul Financiar suggest that Morgan Stanley and David Hay may consider selling the America House office building in Bucharest for around EUR 100 million.

-UniCredit Bank and the EBRD have finalized a synthetic securitization agreement covering a portfolio of approximately EUR 775 million in loans to Romanian SMEs and companies.

COMPANIES

-A Bestjobs survey reveals that a significant majority of Romanians (58%) have had to enhance their skills to maintain or advance their careers, a trend increasingly evident in candidate CVs.

CAPITAL MARKET COMMENTARY

Bucharest stocks experienced a sharp downturn at the close of Wednesday’s trading session, driven by growing uncertainty surrounding the global economic outlook. The benchmark BET index registered a substantial loss of 2.98%. Among blue-chip stocks, Transgaz saw the most significant decline, with its shares plummeting by 4.85%.
