MARKET MOVING NEWS

ECONOMY

-Romania’s trade deficit widened to EUR 8.45 billion in the first quarter of 2025, a 27% increase compared to the same period in 2024, according to data released by the National Institute of Statistics (INS) on Monday, May 12.

FINANCE

-Romania’s Ministry of Finance raised RON 540 million through a government bond auction on Monday, May 12, at an 8.45% average annual yield, reflecting ongoing investor confidence despite challenging economic conditions.

-Garanti BBVA Romania has secured a EUR 50 million financing agreement from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The funds are intended to bolster the bank’s capital base, expand its lending capacity, and support investments in the green economy.

-UniCredit Group, which includes UniCredit Bank Romania, reported a EUR 2.8 billion net profit for the first quarter of 2025, an 8.3% year-on-year increase.

-Intesa Sanpaolo Group, which operates in Romania through Intesa Sanpaolo Bank and the recently acquired First Bank, posted a EUR 2.6 billion net profit for the first three months of 2025, up 14% compared to the same period last year, benefiting from increased interest margins and cost efficiencies.

-Real estate developer One United Properties (ONE.RO) reported RON 352 million in consolidated revenue for Q1 2025, down 16% from the previous year, with net profit falling 39% to RON 96.2 million, according to its latest financial report published on the Bucharest Stock Exchange.

COMPANIES

-Romania’s Romania’s Competition Council has approved the acquisition of Karamolegos Bakery Romania SRL by Vel Pitar SA, consolidating the bakery sector in the local market.

-ELI Parks, one of the largest developers of industrial and logistics parks in Romania, has signed a significant lease agreement with DAAS, a leading provider of commercial refrigeration solutions and part of the international Epta Group.

-Turbomecanica (TBM), Romania’s sole manufacturer of gas turbine engines and mechanical assemblies for aircraft, reported a RON 4.2 million profit for the first quarter of 2025, a 227% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

-AQUILA (AQ.RO), one of the largest fast-moving consumer goods distributors in Romania and the region, posted RON 740 million in Q1 2025 revenue, a 19% year-on-year increase, despite a 3% drop in net profit to RON 19 million, attributed to the new turnover tax and reduced financial revenue, as detailed in its report to the Bucharest Stock Exchange.

-French DIY retailer Leroy Merlin has signed a lease for approximately 4,000 square meters of office space in the Floreasca Park building, located in the Barbu Văcărescu-Floreasca area, one of the largest business hubs in Bucharest.

CAPITAL MARKET COMMENTARY

Romanian stocks traded mixed on Monday as rest of Europe closed in the green after the United States and China agreed to temporarily lower tariffs on imports from the other country, de-escalating their trade conflict. Bucharest’s BET index lost 0.15%.
