MARKET MOVING NEWS

ECONOMY

-Romania’s government debt increased to RON 964.345 billion in December 2024, up from RON 936.995 billion in November 2024, according to data from the Finance Ministry.

-The country’s current account deficit reached EUR 1.64 billion in January 2025, exceeding the EUR 1.42 billion reported in January 2024, according to central bank data released on Monday (March 17, 2025).

-Romania’s energy output experienced a year-on-year decline of 5.8% in January 2025, totaling 1.431 million tons of oil equivalent (TOE). This decrease was primarily attributed to reductions in hydro and wind power generation, as reported by the national statistical office INS, based on preliminary data.

FINANCE

-The Finance Ministry successfully raised RON 1.18 billion from banks on Monday (March 17) through the sale of benchmark bonds, with an annual average yield of 7.40%.

-Iasi-based drug maker Antibiotice Iasi (ATB.RO) is exploring the possibility of issuing bonds on the Bucharest Stock Exchange to secure funding for business development, Ziarul Financiar reported citing Liviu Vatavu, Antibiotice’s executive director and head of Legal and Corporate Governance.

-International rating agency Moody’s has revised Romania’s credit outlook from stable to negative, expressing concerns regarding the nation’s fiscal strength and increasing debt burden.

CAPITAL MARKET COMMENTARY

Romanian stocks began the trading week with gains, mirroring the broader European market, as investors anticipated upcoming monetary policy announcements from the Bank of England, the Swiss National Bank, and the United States Federal Reserve. The Bucharest Stock Exchange’s BET index closed 0.75% higher, with Banca Transilvania leading the blue-chip gainers. Shares of the lender surged by 2.30%.
