Foreign exchange (forex) reserves in Romania stood at EUR 62,841 million, compared to EUR 65,778 million on 30 September 2024, according to data released by the central bank on Friday (Nov. 1).
During the month, the following flows were recorded:
EUR 2,801 million worth of inflows representing: changes in credit institutions’ foreign currency-denominated required reserves with the NBR; inflows into the Ministry of Finance’s accounts and other;
EUR 5,738 million worth of outflows representing: changes in credit institutions’ foreign currency-denominated required reserves with the NBR; interest payments and principal repayments on foreign currency public debt (approximately EUR 1,850 million); payments from the European Commission’s account and other.
The gold stock remained steady at 103.6 tonnes. However, following the change in the international price of gold, its value amounted to EUR 8,520 million.
Gold was up 5% in October and 34% on the year, second only to silver, which has surged 42.3%. Gold prices are typically influenced by the dollar and real yields. However, current high market interest in gold is partly driven by the upcoming U.S. elections, anticipated Federal rate cuts, and broader economic and geopolitical uncertainties, Standard Chartered said in a note. Robust central bank buying has also been a long-standing pillar of support for gold prices worldwide.
On 31 October 2024, Romania’s international reserves (foreign currencies and gold) stood at EUR 71,361 million, compared to EUR 73,663 million on 30 September 2024.
During November 2024, the payments due on the foreign currency-denominated public and publicly guaranteed debt amount to approximately EUR 649 million.
Foreign Exchange Reserves in Romania averaged 29666.37 EUR million from 2000 until 2024, reaching an all time high of 73663.00 EUR million in September of 2024 and a record low of 2598.50 EUR million in February of 2000.
