ECONOMY

-ING economists expect the National Bank of Romania policymakers to maintain the key rate at 6.50% at the 8 November meeting and retain the Bank’s policy flexibility ahead, a decision also magnified by the latest fiscal and geopolitical events.

-The National Bank of Romania kept its benchmark rate at 6.5% in November 2024, marking the second consecutive hold, in line with expectations.

-The banking sector in Romania has one of the lowest fraud rates in Europe, at around 0.007%, head of the Payment Supervision Directorate at the National Bank of Romania (BNR) Raluca Micu told the Nexxt Summit 2024 on Thursday.

FINANCE

-Romania’s Finance Ministry on Friday borrowed RON 105 million from banks in addition to Thursday’s RON 700 million raised through the issuance of benchmark bonds at average yield of 6.79%, data published by the National Bank of Romania (BNR) showed.

-Commercial banks active in the Romanian market reported an aggregated average liquidity surplus of RON 26.9 bln last month, a considerable reduction from RON 39.5 bln in September, Economica.net reported citing BNR data. This is the lowest liquidity surplus in banks and the economy since October 2023.

COMPANIES

-Poland tops the ranking of the 500 biggest companies in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) in 2023, followed by the Czech Republic and Hungary, an annual study conducted by international trade credit insurance company Coface reveals. The fourth spot on the podium goes to Romania thanks to 54 top players in the CEE region, six fewer than in the previous report.

-The representation of the Romanian equity market in the MSCI indices increases as 2 new companies will be included in the indices starting with Nov. 26, namely Turbomecanica (TBM) and Prebet Aiud (PREB).

Investors seemingly reacted to the US Federal Reserve’s decision to cut interest rates by 25 basis points and the Bank of England’s similar move, reducing its rate to 4.75%.
