ECONOMY

-Romania’s current account deficit widened to EUR19.7 billion in the first nine months of 2024, compared with EUR16 billion reported in January-September 2023, the National Bank of Romania (BNR) data showed.

-In September 2024, industrial production increased by 14.0% as gross series compared to August 2024 and was down 0.1% as series adjusted by number of working days and seasonality, according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

FINANCE

-In October 2024, the top 10 brokers present at the Bucharest Stock Exchange, handled RON 1.68 billion worth of deals, according to calculations by Ziarul Financiar daily based on the local bourse data.

-Banca Transilvania, the largest lender in Romania said that its Board of Directors approved a buyback of up to 2 million of BT shares by the end of 2024.

-Bucharest-listed Transilvania Broker de Asigurare, one of the largest insurance brokers in Romania, recorded a net profit of RON2.2 million for the first nine months of 2024, down 65% an annual basis, according to the company’s quarterly financial report sent to the Bucharest Stock Exchange.

COMPANIES

– British telecom giant Vodafone Group will open a cybersecurity center in Romania this month serving several European markets, the company announced in an investors report as it revealed its financial results for the six months ended 30 September 2024.

-IMMO GURU, a company that operates in the field of leasing own real estate property, both in the short term and in the long term, debuts on the Bucharest Stock Echange AeRO market on Thursday (Nov. 14).

-At least 123 agricultural companies in Romania have filed for insolvency so far this year and their number will increase significantly in 2025, according to Infinexa statistics.

-Almost 54% of the surveyed businesspeople from the more than 51,000-strong Group of Romanian Small Business Owners report that growing their local business is more cumbersome than ever, a survey conducted by business training and coaching company Monasi shows. The economic context, unpredictability and the lack of continuous education, were among the main obstacles.

-All surveyed companies have reported salary increases this year, and the estimated growth rate for next year is approximately 6.7%, according to data from the Business Service Leaders Romania (ABSL) Association which includes over 80 companies.

CAPITAL MARKET COMMENTARY

Bucharest stocks traded mixed on Wednesday as rest of Europe closed lower with traders digesting U.S. inflation data. The annual inflation rate matched analysts’ estimates, rising to 2.6% in October from 2.4% in September. The data appeared to fuel market expectations of an interest rate cut by the Federal Reserve next month.
