POLITICS
Romanian President Klaus Iohannis did not receive information from the state institutions regarding the existence of risks of influencing the presidential elections or regarding external interference in the electoral process, the Presidential Administration reported on Monday (Nov. 25). Independent politician Calin Georgescu, 62, won 22.94% of votes in Sunday’s (Nov. 24) voting, the electoral authority said. Centre-right contender Elena Lasconi, leader of the opposition Save Romania Union, lay second with 19.18%. The election run-off will be held on Dec. 8.
ECONOMY
In the first ten months of 2024, Romania’s consolidated budget was in deficit equivalent to 6.19% of the projected GDP, widening from a 3.91% gap a year earlier, as spending increased by 21% to 582.94 billion lei. Two weeks ago, the European Commission estimated that Romania would end 2024 with a budget deficit of 8% of GDP, above the previously forecast level. The government estimates a budget deficit of 7.9% for 2024.
FINANCE
-Romania’s three-month ROBOR index, based on which the cost of consumer loans in lei with variable interest is calculated, reached 5.87% on Tuesday (Nov. 26), up from 5.81% at the beginning of the week.
-Household and company loans stood at RON601.9 billion in October, up 9.8% on an annual basis (4.9% in real terms), after local currency deposits increased by 13.1% and foreign currency ones by 2.6%, according to the National Bank of Romania (BNR) data.
-The shareholders of universal bank Exim Banca Romaneasca whose majority shareholder is the Romanian state, approved on Monday (Nov 25) the bank’s management team for the next four years with Traian Halalai as executive president. Currently, Exim Banca Romanească occupies the 8th position in the ranking of banks in Romania by assets under management.
-SeedBlink, the largest equity crowdfunding platform originated in Romania, announced the launch of its dedicated Secondaries platform, providing individual and institutional investors with access to a growing market of secondary investment opportunities.
COMPANIES
-Poland’s rolling stock producer PESA will deliver the first trains to Romania in mid-2025 and start the homologation process with the Romanian rail watchdog AFER, Ziarul Financiar reported.
-Monsson, the largest developer of renewable energy projects in Romania, has transferred to NEPI Rockcastle, the largest owner, operator and developer of shopping centres in CEE, a 50 MW photovoltaic park located in Chisineu-Cris (Arad county).
