POLITICS

-President Klaus Iohannis, alongside other Heads of States of some NATO member states in Central and Eastern Europe, signed a joint statement reiterating their support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

-Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca conveyed, on Monday, on the occasion of the start of the new academic year 2022-2023, that university education is on the Government’s list of priorities.

-Transport Minister Sorin Grindeanu on Monday toured the construction site of a bridge over the Danube and said that there are some blockages as some technical solutions in the project no longer correspond to the current reality, but he expects the deadline for opening traffic to be met, at the end of the year, according to the schedule employed by the builder.

ECONOMY

-The Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB) lost 2.88 billion RON in capitalization, 1.65%, last week, and the value of share transactions decreased by 17.12 million RON ( -8.59%), compared to the previous week.

-Romania’s foreign exchange reserves stood at EUR43.7 billion in September, up by EUR860 million compared to the previous month, central bank data showed.

-Romania’s finance ministry raised RON201 million on Monday (Oct 3), below the targeted level of RON300 million, selling bonds maturing in 2025, at an annual average yield of 8.6%.

COMPANIES & MARKET

-Romania attracted foreign direct investments (FDI) totaling EUR8.9 billion in 2021, with enterprises’ equity standing at EUR6.7 billion (equity capital worth EUR2.16 billion, plus reinvestment of earnings worth EUR4.58 billion), an analysis by the National Bank of Romania and the National Institute of Statistics (INS) show.

-Romanian authorities issued 30,620 residential building permits in January-August 2022, down 10.5% y-o-y, data from the INS showed.

-New car registrations in Romania grew by 33.38% to a total 11,927 units in September y-o-y, according to data from the association of automotive manufacturers in Romania (ACAROM) and of Romania’s General Directorate for Driving Licenses and Car Registration (DRPCIV).

SOCIAL

-Several thousand people were protesting on Sunday in Bucharest’s Victoriei Square, after marching from University Square. There were about 3,000 people in front of the Victoria Palace of Government. The protest was announced a few days ago by the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) leader, George Simion.

-On Sunday, 94,858 people entered Romania, through border points throughout the country, of which 8,914 were Ukrainian citizens, a decrease of about 16% compared to the previous day, the General Inspectorate of the Border Police informed.
