POLITICS

-National leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Marcel Ciolacu told Agerpres on Monday that he refuses to believe that Romania will not enter the Schengen Area, adding that the time has come for Europe to “stand in solidarity” with Romania.

-Romania is better prepared to receive refugees from Ukraine, but there are currently no signals that there would be an increase in their number, secretary of state in the Interior Ministry Raed Arafat said on Sunday (Oct. 9) in northeastern Romanian city of Suceava.

ECONOMY

-Romania’s FOB/CIF trade balance in the first eight months of 2022 widened by 7.381 billion euros, to 22 billion euros, as exports rose by 25.1%, and imports increased by 31%, National Institute of Statistics (INS) data showed.

-The three-month ROBOR, the interbank interest rate used as a reference to calculate variable interests for loans in lei taken out before May 2019, stood at 7.99% y-o-y on Monday (Oct. 10), up from 7.96% on Friday (Oct. 7).

COMPANIES & MARKET

-The number of companies that suspended their activity in January-August 2022 was 9,598, up 20.4% y-o-y, National Trade Register Office (ONRC) data showed.

-Romania’s smartphone market increaded by 18% in value to EUR820 million in the first eight months of this year compared with the same period a year ago, while falling 2% in volume, according to OPPO Romania.
