CAPITAL MARKET COMMENTARY

Bucharest stocks ended the first trading day of the New Year sharply higher mirroring the trend across Europe where major indices closed with strong gains. The pan-European Stoxx 600 provisionally closed up 1.3%, with almost all sectors in positive territory as Germany published lower-than-expected inflation figures for December, down to 9.6% year on year.

13:26 Romanian President Klaus Iohannis made, last year, 21 foreign trips totaling expenses of over 16.6 million RON (about 3.387 million euros), according to a response from the Presidential Administration, to the request of Agerpres.

11:01 This year, the Romanian authorities intend to continue the steps for accession to the Schengen area and to the OECD and to support the European path of the Republic of Moldova. These are some of the priorities of diplomacy from Bucharest stated in the annual report of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

16:52 Romania’s foreign exchange reserves stood at EUR46.63 billion on December 31, 2022, up 15% versus the end of 2021 and 2% above the level recorded on November 30, 2022, National Bank of Romania data showed.

11:24 New passenger car registrations reached 129,328 units in 2022, up 6.7% from 2021, namely 121,208 units, carmakers’ association ACAROM and DRPCIV data show.

10:24 The number of employees in the Capital city reached, in October 2022, 1,058,326 people, an increase by 1,445 people (0.13%) compared to the previous month, National Institute of Statistics data showed. The average gross salary was 8,505 RON and the net 5,220 RON.

13:43 Real estate developer Belgian Atenor has signed a contract regarding its intention to sell the office compound @Expo of Bucharest’s Expozitiei area to Adventum Group, Ziarul Financiar reported.

12:05 A system of pre-selection of goods traffic was carried out on a special thoroughfare at the Nadlac II Border Crossing Point, on the A1 highway, where equipment was installed to identify the trucks that are already registered in the database and they no longer have to wait at the scales, resulting in a smoother flow of trucks leaving Romania and shorter waiting times at the border, according to the representatives of the Timisoara Regional Directorate of Roads and Bridges (DRDP), Agerpres reported.

11:35 Agencies that have brought foreign tourists to Romania can receive money from the state through a government program. These are the stays attended by at least 200 foreign visitors, with a duration of at least four nights, according to the Ministry of Entrepreneurship and Tourism.

10:28 The Competition Council has sanctioned 65 companies and an association with total fines amounting to over 130 million lei (approx. 26 million euros) that allegedly participated in an agreement on the Romanian vehicle maintenance and repair services market. 56 of the sanctioned companies are or were members of the Dacia, Renault and Nissan Dealers Association – ACODAREN and carry out, among other things, car repair activities.
