CAPITAL MARKET COMMENTARY

Stocks in Bucharest snapped their losing streak and headed into the weekend higher bucking the trend across Europe where markets closed lower with investors processing economic decisions following a week of key decisions on monetary policy that saw both the European Central Bank (ECB) and the Bank of England (BoE) increase interest rates by further 50 basis points (bps) on Thursday. Nuclearelectrica’s shares jumped 3.20% to close at 43.6000 points.

14:27 The US senate confirmed Kathleen Kavalec as the country’s ambassador to Romania. She is a former nominee to be the US Ambassador to Albania under President Donald Trump. Previously, she was Deputy Assistant Secretary in the US State Department’s Office for European and Eurasian Affairs.

13:03 The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, will be present, on Saturday (Dec. 17), at the Cotroceni Palace in Bucharest, at the signing ceremony of the Agreement between the governments of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Romania and Hungary regarding the Strategic Partnership in the field of green energy development and transport, Agerpres reported.

09:01 Romanian president Klaus Iohannis on the sidelines of the European Council meeting in Brussels on Thursday (Dec. 15) declared himself certain that, when the Austrian and Dutch votes receive a clarification, Romania’s accession to Schengen will immediately be on the agenda of the Council of Justice and Home Affairs in March.

10:15 The total number of non-resident tourists staying in collective tourist accommodation structures was 1.167 million, in January-September 2022, their expenses totaling 3.157 billion RON (around 609 million euros), on average 2.704 RON/person, National Institute of Statistics (INS) data showed.

09:47 The unemployment rate in Romania the third quarter of 2022 stood at 5.4%, up by 0.1 percentage points compared to the one recorded in the previous quarter, with the highest level, 23.9%, being recorded among young people, INS data showed.
